Your questions answered
Some salons don't insist on an allergy test - so is it really that important?
seanhanna: Reactions to colour are not that common but when they happen they can be serious and in extreme cases will be fatal. As an ethical business we cannot in good conscience ignore the procedures put in place to protect you.
I have been colouring my hair all my life so I am obviously not going to have a reaction?
seanhanna:This is not true. In fact most reactions that do occur are on people who have previously had colour. In the same way that you might never have had hay fever, but then out of the blue, you start getting it.
Then why do some salons just colour hair without these safety procedures?
seanhanna: These are tough times. A client that is impatient and just wants their colour done will often go to a different salon if they have to have an allergy test. It's hard to watch that money walk out the door. So salons are under increasing pressure to just go ahead and do the colour anyway.
If I really just want to get my colour done and I am happy to take the risk myself, can I just sign something?
seanhanna: We can ask the questions that will cover the main safety indicators. If you agree that none of these apply to you, you can sign a form in the salon or use our online consent form that says that you have answered the questions honestly. In this instance we will proceed with the colour. But again, please remember that these are in place for your safety.
Do I have to buy an allergy test?
seanhanna: No! Our in-salon allergy tests are free. You just need to come into the salon at least 48 hours before your appointment to have this done. You don't need an appointment for this, but you may have to wait till someone is available to do this for you. It takes just a couple of minutes to do the test.
When do I not need an allergy test?
seanhanna: If you regularly have your hair coloured in a seanhanna salon, we will have all your colour records. As long as you don't leave it more than 6 months you won't need an allergy test unless you have a change in your personal situation - use the allergy test checker to see if you should have an allergy test.

Does it take long to have an allergy test?

No! It takes just a couple of minutes. We apply a small amount of target shade colour behind your ear using a cotton bud. And that's it. You just leave it on for 48 hours. If you have no irritation you are good to go.

"I am well aware that allergy tests are frustrating, but your safety has to come first"

No one wishes that allergy tests were not needed more than me. But sadly they are. Allergic reactions are quite rare, but if they do happen, they can be extremely uncomfortable and in some situation extremely serious. We have designed the allergy test form above to help you understand if you need to have one. If you need one, I urge you to have one. They a super quick to do. You won't need an appointment and of course they are free.
